As a new ownership team takes the helm, the future of the Waterview Tower condo/hotel development is back in the headlines. The question on the table: Should the unfinished tower be raised, razed or repurposed? What useful purpose can the property serve? We have a few ideas:
Parking — OK, it would cost to convert the structure, but Loop drivers would appreciate the added spaces.
Movie set — No more searching for a construction site to stage “cliffhanger” scenes. Chicago has a site now available. How’s that for a Hollywood ending?
Storage units — Think of the things downtown condo residents could stash, close to home. Neat.
Weather station — Track Chicago’s ever-changing climate conditions from this convenient perch.
River regatta box seats — Chicago doesn’t actually have a river regatta, but this is the perfect excuse to start one.
Outdoor-furnishings showroom — Home owners and their decorators could see balcony furniture in its natural environment, steps from the Mart. . Open floors six and up only to the trades.
Antique and rummage sale — Save the drive to Kane County. Invite dealers to show their wares here. Extra elevators may be required.
Paintball course — Run across the wide open spaces. Dodge behind the columns. It’s all good, clean — or at any rate, water-soluble — fun.
Marketing activities center — Climbing contests for outdoor outfitters. A 3D canvas for wrap artists. A pedestal for the world’s largest (your product here). Giant billboards for just about anything. Reserve your space today!
Other ideas? Share. If we all put our heads together, we’ll figure it out.
